Deemed a ‘successful woman ‘entrepreneur’ in rural Mwanza , Mama Rahel Shigella was the only one of 30 trainees who succeeded in converting her new-found skills into a business that produces and sells improved cookstoves to local customers. Despite all these, rural entrepreneurs like Mama Rahel Shigella are not making enough profits for this to become a fully fledged ‘business’. Read More>

Ashden Green Energy Awards: international entries needed by 21 October 2008

The Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy are seeking inspirational and innovative local sustainable energy projects based in countries with developing economies. Entry is free, and up to seven winners will receive £20,000 each in prize money for project development, with one Energy Champion awarded £40,000. The Awards will be presented at a VIP ceremony in London in June 2009. Read More >
Spotlight on Gaia Association: successful small scale biofuel projects
Gaia Association is an Ethiopian NGO established in 2005 to further the aims of Project Gaia Research Studies in promoting the use of renewable alcohol fuels (ethanol and methanol) for household energy in Ethiopia. The Gaia Association seeks to reduce household energy dependence on imported petroleum and hazardous solid biofuels, improve indoor air quality by preventing smoke-related health problems, and increase user safety and quality of life. GVEP International brings Partners together to share technical knowledge and increase access to energy in Brazil Indian Rural Energy Network (IRENet) : Partnering the use in clean energy in villages
IRENet-Indian Rural Energy Network, an initiative of the Canadian government, is a Registered Society in India. IRENet Members are all well established non government organisations (NGOs) and together, cover all Indian states. They work on sustainable clean energy programmes at grass root levels, involving villagers and local community leaders. Read More>
As part of our agreement with the Ashden Awards to provide technical support to their award winners, GVEP International sent the 2008 winner Joao Alderi do Prado from the Cooperative Regional de Eletrificação Rural do Alto Uruguai Ltda (CRERAL) Brazil, to visit biodigester companies near Munich, Germany.
